The Detroit Lions have had name-brand recognition within National Football League circles since 1934, spanning eight decades. But the evolutionary tale of Detroit's nickname underwent a series of changes during professional football's days of infancy.

The "Panthers" was Detroit's NFL entry in 1925 and 1926. It failed, as did its predecessor, the Detroit Heralds (1920-21), along with a city-sponsored team in 1928, the Detroit Wolverines, which utilized old players from the area and posted a 7-2-1 record.

The Heralds then came into existence as a charter member of the American Professional Football Association, the original name of the NFL. They were 1-3 the first year, eighth among 13 teams. In 1921, the team finished with a 1-5-1 record, 14th among 17 teams.

Finally, in 1934, the organization settled on the name that would be uttered in Detroit and all around the league to this very day. The Detroit News, in a March 16 editorial, headlined "Let's Have Pro Football". A month later, the Lions' first head coach, Potsy Clark, would be in town, already pumping the Lions. The team also set out to select uniforms featuring the color blue.

The Lions (so-named in keeping with the jungle cat image of the city's baseball team, the Tigers) also got a refurbished team bus, painted blue and silver, and used it to travel to their games and practices at Chandler Park.

John Millen of the Detroit Zoo, meanwhile, gave the team two Lion cubs as mascots. Named "Grid" and "Iron," the two cubs accompanied the team to its games.

A lot of early NFL teams tried to identify in some way with whatever MLB team was near them. The New York Football Giants were in fact named after the baseball team that played in New York at the time. There were also New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers teams in the NFL.

The Detroit team chose a "cat" name to go along with the Tigers baseball team.

It's kind of sad really...the first owner for the Detroit football franchise was mauled to death by a lion in his home one night. And it was really odd, cos there aren't too many lions in Detroit.
But they decided they'd name their team the Lions and then give them colors that have absolutely everything to do with lions.....light blue and gray. (???)
