How can you be sure the couple were depressed?
When you reach certain age, being together and enjoying the scenery is quite enough. If they live together, they get plenty of time and opportunity to talk. When you are younger, people are a lot more energetic and they need to spend energy by all means, so they talk and talk even if their talk makes no sense.
You could have interpreted the same scene as an old couple who took their dog to have a little fun outdoors, and if the dog was putting a little show was because it was happy. From my experience, when my dogs feel I am low down, they do not display happiness, they sit quiet next to me, or try to caress me as showing they are there for me.
Learn to be more objective on your judgements, if you can't help it being judgemental.

Hmmm...how do you know the couple was depressed? If the couple have been together a long time - they are probably like a lot of couples that just feel comfortable - just being....no need to talk. Obviously the dog wanted to play and then just calmed down when he wasn't getting the response he desired....perhaps he just got on their "quiet wavelength". I agree with you that THAT is a miraculous and beautiful capacity that dogs have. I have two dogs. When I found out my father died 8 years ago, my dog (I only had 1 at the time) saw me sobbing/crying and snuggled up against me calmly and stayed with me the whole night. Conversely, when I'm pumped up after a long work week - I come home to two dogs that pick up on that with just a look and are rowdy and psyched for the weekend as well. The coolest thing I've ever witnessed a long the lines of what you are talking about was my younger dog Buddy (who is a clown) saw a little girl maybe 3 yrs. old crying. As we walked by the child and her father the girl saw Buddy and stopped crying momentarily to say "doggie" her dad who was holding her put her down and Buddy calmly stood there, staring at her, wagging his tail. In 2 seconds the girl started giggling and said "He is silly". ...she nailed the #1 adjective to define my dog in 2 seconds - AND it immediately made her stop crying and start laughing. THAT is cool. Dogs are a great gift to us humans.

I think the dog wanted them to play with him. I don't think you'll need to worry the dog will not get depressed.
