politicians are human just like everyone else. However, they are in the public eye and anything no matter how minor will be used against them. Since politicians are given power by the people to conduct our business, I want to know when they mess up big time; however, I do not want to know that they cheated on a history exam in high school 20 years ago. It seems like now, no matter how long ago or how minor, it is going to be thrown in their faces.

Doesn't anybody get more publicity when they mess up? As the PR shills say, "Any publicity is good publicity!"

And, yeah, politicians really are that nasty. That's why they're politicians.

Come to Poland and observe our politicians. Their way of thinking: the more controversial ideas => more publicity => the better.
The thing is people don't have ANY trust towards politicians anyomre (don't know who voted for them). Even if they people protest it doesn't really have any impact, the goverment is in it's own separate paralel universe. It's sick and sad but true.

No more nasty than many.

The media just makes more of it - remember that controversy sells more newspapers, attracts more viewers, etc. The media does not take the view that good news attracts people.

They just get more publicity when they mess up of course.
Human nature being what it is, we secretly like seeing that type of thing because it reassures us that we ourselves are not so bad.

It's a little of both, whether alcohol abuse or sexual peccadilloes or financial improprieties or your standard verbal gaffe, they seem to think they live in a world where the rules of society don't apply to them
