I broke out in hives this morning and needed to take benadryl. I am currently nursing my baby part-time. Do I need to "pump & dump", and if so, for how long?

Don't worry, I'll call my pharmacist when they open this morning. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this.

Thanks!

This happened to me when I was breastfeeding my son. I was advised to take Piriton instead of any other anti-histamine, and to 'pump and dump' until 24 hours after the last dosage was taken. Admittedly given the variations in health service, you might get any one of a hundred answers to this, so you are right that calling a pharmacist or a doctor would be best.

"Mom's use of Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton are generally regarded to be compatible with breastfeeding, but always double-check the active ingredients. Monitor your infant for possible drowsiness if you use an antihistamine." You can call up a nurse's hotline, or even the L&D floor at your local hospital. Another person that may know is your local pharmacist.

No pumping and dumping necessary-- benedryl is a very safe medication to take while breastfeeding. It is classified by Dr. Thomas Hale (the author of Medications and Mother's Milk and the leading authority on medications and breastfeeding) as an L2 drug, which means "safer." Drugs are classified from L1 to L5, with L1 being the safest and L5 being contraindicated with breastfeeding.

Benadryl is classified as a "Lactation Risk Category L2" by Dr. Hale in "Medications & Mothers' Milk" which means "safer." (Meds are rated L1 to L5 with L1 being safest and L5 being a big no-no.) Seems to be a pretty safe choice. No reason to supplement or to pump and dump. Breastfeed as normal.

After breastfeeding 4, I can say that I rarely used anything but would if necessary. Benedryl is going to make baby sleepy as it does pass thru into the milk. I never had a problem with it especially once they were eating other foods. Might try cream 1st tho and pharmacy is a good idea.

It's relatively safe for breastfeeding, but Kellymom lists a few other medications that will work better in case it happens again. I've added the link for you to check out. Feel better!

benadryl is safer than most things to leave traces in the breast milk. they have childrens' benadryl. it is safe enough for my dogs and cats. Supplement for at least 12 hours:)
