no it is not harmfull however if lightning stikes at your house or a neighbours your electricity will surge therefore damaging everything that is pluged into an electrical socket.

it is not harmful if nothing near you gets struck by lightning!

in basic terms having the modem plugged into the pc and the telephone jack can enable lightning to surge to an "off" modem and pc. I even have seen this. no longer something is as rapid as lightning. Lightning is swifter than electrical energy. As an aside, a different lightning strike will turn on your television's distant and command the television to come again on. i've got seen it ensue on the lower back porch of a house for the time of a hurricane. Now, on the different hand, they used to sell surge protectors for the telephone jack besides to the protector for the pc. If the surge occurs away out of your place earlier coming downstream, those instruments will shelter you. no remember if that's a right away hit on the utility link in the back of your place, there is an exceedingly great "if" that the surge protector will clamp the surge in time. Underground utility telephone and capability lines grant plenty greater secure practices and are not companies to lighning surges with the aid of fact the previous type of capability/verbal substitute lines that run alongside telephone poles on your region.

Leaving anything plugged in or running during a thunderstorm could damage or ruin the equipment, because of electrical surges from lightning strikes.

I lost a television set during a thunderstorm a few years ago. Had my computer been plugged in, I could have lost everything.

Yes during thunderstroms.. But not really if you just leave it on any other time. Matter of fact its kinda good for it. You keep a steady current through it by leaving it on.
