You start by yourself.
In the morning when you wake up, spend a whole day doing to others what you'd like them to do for you. Stand up on the bus for the lady in front of you. Pick up the guy's books when he falls. Pay the toll for the person behind you in the toll booth. Seriously, random acts of kindness that you don't need to do. That will make the world better.

If everyone did something to help another person just one time every day just imagine what a ripple effect there would be! You asked how to make the world a better place to live... this will not change the whole world, but think how much better existing here will be :-)

Maybe part of the solution could involve people taking responsibility for their own actions? We seem to be heading down the path of 'I'm right, Jack'. Its an expression that means I will take care of ME first, and bugger everyone else.
Change starts with the family unit (however the family is structured), then communities, then societies...
Bottom line is: it starts with each of us, and it starts today.
