Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is like a tree that begins from a mustard seed. Although we are looking at making the whole world a better place to live, we need to begin with the minute mustard seed-- you and I. If I can become a good and happy (fully satisfied and content with what I have, and at peace with others) person, that is the greatest contribution I can make to this cause. Once there are sufficient number of good and happy people in the world, that creates enough force to transform the world.

The world is already a great place to live, it is just that the stuff that is on the inside of so many of us seems to make the world dark and ugly, a kill-joy. the simple answer is on an individual level each one of us must part with anything unlike good, and that is hard because so many people do not recognize the face of evil, so how or why would they make an effort to eradicate it from their consciousness. The bottom line is to cleanse thought of impurities.

This "world" that you are referrring to is not the same world for everybody. That is the problem. Literally we are all living in our own worlds. We are relatively happy and safe in our respective worlds.

All we can do is to keep our individual worlds nice and peaceful. If , one by one, we all start to do that way the common world MAY emerge. And that will be a better world.

What can we do? You do? Contribute your might in your own way. Anything , big or small. This evening you can start with an insignificant action. Keep aside one cup of rice ( or wheat or cereal) each day for sending to someone somewhere who is struggling for a single meal. Just this act is sufficient.

Well... Apart of big things to cope with like world hunger, wold peace, taking care of natural and cultural heritage I believe the crucial thing is to start from little things done around yourself and your nibhourhood. Do some volounteer work (of any kind you're interested in), talk to people around you and try helping them with problems. And smile, it's never overrated :)
This world is NOT a great place. Hungry children, who are analfabets and have to work for less than a dollar a day; ill old people who can't afford to buy medicines; pets dying slowly and in pain because of people cruelty; diapearing rainforests, do I need to continue?

Do we have enough space to list we should do?
Just a short list of things we can do for improving our life:
Respect other people, listen to others opinion and accept different life style and opinion
Safeguard environment, animals, wilderness and the oceans. Stop dumping waste into everywhere
Help the weak population: sick, old, people in underdeveloped countries
Invest more and more in education

Actually education is the key: teach people to learn, to care, to listen, to protect.
