Depends on the species... I think its either King or Emperor penguins that court each other with pebbles - if th female accepts the male's pebble then they stay together for the rest of their lives, I believe (having said that there's increasing evidence that the swan, held high as the paragon of fidelity, will cheat on its partner if it can)
