For a continuing animated series: Cowboy Bebop. Love the characters, the plotline, the mood, the jazz score. The characters interact in somewhat predictable ways but you always learn a little bit more.
The plotline is that they are bounty hunters and often the bounty seems to get away. The setting is the solar system after Earth is destroyed.
The drawing style is dark and understated. Not the cheap flashy stuff you are used to in anime. There is a jazz music score that helps reinforce the mood. Very non-Japanese but very very cool.
Best single movie: Howl's Moving Castle.

Most of my friends do not remember what I used to watch as a child nearly every week. It s a cartoon called "captain planet" Ther were 5 kids. (1 from each continet) and each of them had a ring (with of the element s such as love, fire, water, air and earth) Togheter they could call captain planet, who helped them out when they saved the world.
It would really surprise me, when you know it, but i just loved it.

Personally it's my own cartoons that I hand draw. I'd like to get it made into an animation one day. That would be awesome, but it would cost way too much.
