In the U.S., this term has been used to denote a car with fixed window frames, as opposed to the hardtop style where the sash, if any, winds down with the glass. As hardtops have become rarer, this distinction is no longer so important. A sedan can be a 4 door or 2 door.

My GEO Prizm has four doors, and the owner's card says SDN for body style. Sedan. My old Plymouth, a much larger car, had two doors. The owner's card had CPE for coupe. But I looked farther, and dug up on old '74 VW Beetle owner's card and it was marked SDN! A Beetle has two doors and is smaller than the other two cars. So the terms are obviously flexible, although the two/four door distinction usually calls it. And then there's soft top vs. hard top. Around here, if it's made of steel it's a hard top. If it's made of fabric and you can put it down, it's a soft top or convertible.

Yes coupe is 2 door. Hatchback in typically 3 doors (coupe w/ rear hatch).SUV-sports utility vehicle, Van- enclosed larger-boxier vehicle, Pick-up truck- single seater (generally) with open bed in back, station wagon -(or Wagon) 4 door version of Hatchback. That about covers most types- I think.

Old joke. Why don't you put more than 2 doors in a chicken coop? Answer: If you did, it would be a chicken sedan.
