My grandfather told me that the letter 'A' has a silent 'D' is this true or should I smother him with a pillow like I did to my Grandmother ?

Hmmm....obviously you didn't believe your grandmother when she told you about the silent "ch" in the spelling of the letter "i" either huh??? LOL.
Whatever you do, DON'T ask your mom about the spelling for the letter "o"....it'll push you right over the edge! LOL
