I'd avoid the Sony's, Phillips etc as they have a lot of copywrite protection stuff that can make simple tasks very frustrating. Have you tried DELL? They sell direct online and I reckon you get more bang for your buck. If you prefer to see a face when you buy then don't be afraid of names you haven't heard of, many of them are made in the same factories as the expensive top of lines. Depending on what you want the laptop for, you'll need to check its statistics. Your processor is the brain of your machine. You'll have heard of Intel Pentium, they're always changing names but the Centrino Mobile Technology line is what I have myself, pretty good. AMD also make good chips, ask the sales guy which one. Harddrive is storage capacity, at least 60Gigabytes. RAM is shortterm memory, important for image processing and media, at least 512Megabytes. Graphics Cards are only really important if you want to play highend games. DVD-R/RW means you can watch and record DVD's and usually means there is video editing software bundled with the machine. My advice is keep asking questions like "Will it do this?" until you find one you like.

wait untill january and buy a system with vista already loaded onto it, this way you dont have to pay 300-400 pound. when you want to upgrade to vista also a better spec laptop will be out by then. also the acer ferrari had major overheating problems! search for a ROCK laptop they are fast and reliable and affordable however they only sell online!
stay away from pc world they will only show you the laptops that will generate more profit for them and will not be as helpfull as other places.

Try Dell. They have free delivery at the moment. They have a really smart one for £999 that sits as an ultra slim desk top p.c and can be folded into it's self and used as a laptop. Sounds weird but look at their website, it's fabulous, wish I had the money right now for that one.

i don't know about across the pond, but here in the states, phillips, or phillips magnivox, is a pure crap company. i have seen there tvs, vcrs, and dvd players fail in less than 2 years, all with 1 year warrenty. i would suggest you look for a better brand.
