it usually happens when your CPU is overheating, it does this to stop it from frying.
make sure your computer is well ventilated and maybe look into buying a new fan or cooling system.
if you have overclocked your CPU then try reducing it a bit

this is a easy problem to fix, simply go to system properties>advanced>startup and recovery>then look for the box with "automatically restart",then untick this box ,press ok then remember to apply
when windows has a problem again it will not switch off,but beware, windows has been doing this for a reason so you need to diagnose the source of the problem
the best way to do this is start from the top of your pc and physically check and inspect every part and component ,and check for any dirt, dust, and defective parts, such as broken cables or split wires....a torch and a small brush will be needed and give your p.c a good clean, making sure all your system fans are thouroughly cleaned,as bad ventelation can be overheating your cpu, also a new cpu fan wouldnt go a miss and can be bought quite cheaply
also make sure that your fans are not obstructed by ide cables or wires,if this is the case and you cant move them you may need to buy a new case, making sure its 25% or more bigger than your existing case
good luck

it sounds like it is overheating the cpu, take off side panel and start up computer and visually check first that all the fans are working, if not then why not? loose connection maybe, unplugged, faulty fan. if everything ok then switch off computer and clean away dust with either a vacuum(be carefull) or i also use a footpump for inflatable beds and get the nozzle right where you need it(cheaper than using compressed gas)also if you don't know how-get someone to repaste your heat sink to the cpu which will aid heat dissapation. ideally you should have at least three fans in your system,- one on the cpu blowing down, one in the back blowing out and one in the front blowing/sucking in, a side panel fan is also a good idea, mine blows out but it really is down to personal preference. i have 2x 80mm in bottom of front panel, 2x 40mm side by side in midle of front panel side by side in a 5 1/2 inch drive bay, a double fan on my master drive, a single extraction fan on my slave drive, a 60mm on my cpu, an 80mm in the side panel, a 90mm in the rear and the power pack fan, and it runs the drives at a steady 32 degrees C. also you could change your ribbon cables for round ones which aid better air flow through your system. HOPE THIS HELPS

Richard is right; you may need to unplug it, take the side off and hoover it out - don't touch anything, just clean the dust out and make sure the air vents aren't blocked.
You can also get cans of compressed air to blow the dust out but only use very short bursts as the air will freeze anything you leave it on too long.

Mine kept doing this, well more re-starting itself for no reason.
Try downloading an anti-spyware package such as spybot search and destroy or Adaware SE (or both as they tend to pick up different things).
Also get rid of any unwanted cookies on your pc - try downloading cookie monster.
Run both of these and get rid of any rubbish.
Then shut down all your programmes (i.e. everything in the bottom right hand corner of the screen) and then run a system defrag (Start > programmes > accessories > system tools > defrag)
All of this should give your pc a pretty good clean up and may sort it out, it worked for me!

IF you suspect that the computer is NOT overheating, go to properties on your "my computer", go to advanced tab, click on the settings on "startup and recovery" and uncheck the "automatically restart" under system failure.
