which one do you need for a name change on a social security card? I know it must show your previous last name AND your new last name. Which one is it?

I would take both just in case.

Well, the minister that performs your ceremony keeps the license, signs it and does all the official stuff with it, and returns it to the courthouse. You don't keep the license. After the wedding, you are issued the certificate, and that is what you must take to the Social Security office. Also use it to change your drivers license. You can't use the license, because having it means you aren't married yet.

I think that you can use either one, but the marriage certificate is the one that is official from the county you were married in...
