You have far too much data stored on it thats why. Memory included you need to do a disk cleanup and get rid of what you don't need to make room for this new feature.

Stop Here. Get you HD and try it on another computer. It sounds like a virus but this virus will most likely be installed on your HD where your OS is installed or has got a shortcut there to run it on start up. So, if you connect your USB HD to another comp the virus will not run unless you run it manually i.e. if it's hidden within one of your mp3 then it will only run (and possibly install its start up links) when you try to play it. Once you've connected it to another pc, scan it with an Anti virus program and your problem should be solved.

You need to backup your files before reformatting. Specially the important ones, you can save them on a USB, or if you have another hard disk that will do. There must be a virus that corrupted your hard disk. You need to check it with an anti virus.

Was your computer seeing the whole drive? Do you have it fomatted into smaller chunks.. different drive names.. for each one you should have some swap space..
the filesystem needs "elbow room" to operate under typical
load; this 8% space is reserved. (It may be consumed by the root user, if required.) Tuning down the reserved percentage is not recommended unless you know what you're doing (that is: benchmark your typical usage to see if the performance is still within acceptable limits).

You may be having a virus or spyware installed on your PC. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html I can also give you a link that deals with hard drive problems.
Some RAM/ hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

Sounds to me like you've picked up a virus on one of the downloads you did. You have to stick to websites that are up to snuff and totally trustworthy or this will happen every time. The chances are you need to wipe everything off your hard drive and start over.
