I think that Art is the way an artist expresses himself. And I think the written arts, plays, poetry and literature probably give the artist the broadest canvas (so to speak) for self-expression.

I think it all depends on the writer's orientation. A great many successful playwrights have a long affiliation with theatre, as actors, directors, etc. David Mamet is a good contemporary example.
A novelist is a much more "controlling" sort of a writer; he or she gives the reader all of the action, all of the character motivation, all of the setting, and all of the dialogue. A playwright is much more of a collaborative artist. He or she produces a script, but it isn't a PLAY until a director, a cast of actors, and a crew of designers and technicians add their input. Very different orientations.

i don't think literature and playwriting should be a way to advocate the author's bleiefs. politics and activism would be a better place for that. literature, as an art, should be about creating something interesting, something beautiful, something that makes the public think.
of course, the author's opinions can appear in the text, but a play it's not about making a point, in my opinion

for politics no it is not a good idea, for other things maybe but remember that people are seeing the show for enjoyment, they don't want his opinion shoved down there throat.

Yes. It's often more effective and goes down easier than an outright tirade.
