Help him by sitting down and talking about the subject first, feelings, friendships he has / lost and how he has felt
Dont get someone else to write it / use someone elses ideas - this is cheating and he wont learn anything from it
Let it come from his heart / mind - he'll be rewarded in the long term, not only in his class but also in his mind

Honestly, it's not difficult to write a poem. It's difficult to write a GOOD poem, but that's not what's expected.
Hey, it doesn't even have to rhyme.
Ask your son to think about what friendship means to him, and then to think of interesting words, phrases, comparisons that he might want to use in his poem. As I said, poetry doesn't have to have any specific form, so if he feels comfortable working freely at that point, let him go for it.
If he feels like he needs more structure to his work, suggest some different forms for him to try - Haiku is an interesting one to research. It appears very short and simple, but the idea is to convey a single snapshot image in just three lines, quite a challenge. You can also string haikus together to form a longer, more narrative piece.
Rhyming couplets is a very easy one to try, works quite well if you want to inject a bit of humour. A limerick might be interesting too.
Those are some simple ideas, if he wants to work with something a bit more complex then get him to google poetry forms, for more of a challenge he could try a sonnet or a pantoum, they're fun to do.

how old is your son? Because the style depends on the age, the vocabulary does... but I will try to spark some inspiration!
Friendship is a big word,
With so many little and simple meanings.
To offer your hand when someone falls,
That is being a friend.
To stick up for someone,
To keep their biggest secret.
When you lend them your belongings,
Or help them read a hard book.
You are being a friend,
Friendship isn't hard.
When you are able to sit in silence,
And still be totally comfortable.
When you can laugh at yourself,
And when you cheer someone up.
When you know that something is wrong,
And can figure it out.
When you can compromise,
Just because you care about the person.
You have friendship,
Such a precious thing.
When you can laugh at the silliest thing,
When you can cry on their shoulder.
When you can talk about anything,
When you help them through the tough times.
Friendship is all around us,
With so many ways to be a friend.

I wanted to write the poem for him but then again I thought it would be better he write it himself and his own ideas. All I could do is give him a guide line on what to write about friendship.
1) He should understand what does friendship really mean.He can write about the meaning of friendship as an introduction,i.e as the 1st verse.
2) Then he can write about a friend, how he feels about him/her and why he/she is a very special friend.
3) Write about things they did, shared or experienced together, which made the bond of friendship between them become stronger and stronger.
4) The conclusion, write how he feels about their friendship and how important and influential friendship could be in our life and universally.
Well that's all I could think of.Hope it could help and give him some ideas of what to write. It's better for him to try doing it himself because it would be most meaningful to him, writing his own feelings.
Have confidence!!! I am sure he can do it.GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

u said it yourself. u said that it was ur SON'S hmwk. i wont give u a poem, but i will give u advice on how to get him to write one;
1. get your son to write down a few notes on what a friend is/does example; friends help and see when u rnt happy
they play with u at recess
they are always there for u
2. get him to write a few similes and metaphors
my friend is as kind as an angel
our friendship is strong like iron
a circle is all round it has no end, like our friendship
3. then get you son to write a rough draft of teh poem using the notes and the similes.
4. have your son create a final copy and decorate it with pix

pick in case you desire your poem to rhyme...if sure, pick effortless words to end your lines - ones which would be person-friendly to locate a rhyme for. think of of a rhyme which you already understand (lower back, something person-friendly)...according to risk even a nursery rhyme. Use that as a foundation for the rhythm of your lines. pick what you think of friendship potential eg worrying, sharing, being there for the different individual, laughter, tears, and so on. and positioned them into your poem. Eg Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall ( 8 beats) Humpty Dumpty had a great fall (8 beats) each and all the King's horses and each and all the King's men (10 beats) could no longer positioned Humpty at the same time lower back. (10 beats) Friendship potential continually to be there (8 beats) whilst hassle comes i'm going to continually care (8 beats) i would be there to objective and dry your tears (10 beats) to keep you from harm, and nonetheless all your fears (10 beats) ..............it is amazingly effortless, in basic terms rhyming couplets and retaining to a popular metre....in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it supplies you some thought of a commence on your verse.

I could write one, but your son is meant to do it. Depending on how old he is, he could try for something very simple in the-
Friendship is...
Friendship does...
Friends are...
kind of thing, or he could go for a haiku
or even a limerick.
If you ask again, and give a lot more detail, I'm sure it would be easier to answer.

if we write the poem its not his, is it?
getting ideas re the subject, stanzas ect is ok but you are asking for trouble, make him do the work. in the long run that is how he will learn that the effort applied is comensurate with the results obtained. LF
