Regarding the other answers :Good INFO, But not what you need to KNOW!!!
YOU DESCRIBED THE SYSTEM VERY WELL....
You have ONE computer DIRECTLY connected to your DSL MODEM.
THAT IS YOUR LAN!!
You have no other connections...no other computers in your home connected to that modem....
If you did.....you would have ANOTHER BOX sitting right next to it with a Bunch of Blinking lights on it.....
Just like I have on my desk......
So that wire coming out of your computer to your Cable Modem (or your DSL Modem) connects the 2 ENDs of YOUR LAN.....TOGETHER!
You got a piece of LAN inside your computer, a wire, and a piece of LAN Outside your computer called a Modem...That's it....That's a LAN!

A LAN (Local Area Network) connection is any connection that permits the sharing of information or resources, ie: printers faxes etc. I believe what you want to know is do you have a LAN port on your computer. It sounds as if you do. It is an RJ-45 Connection and looks exactly like a phone plug except that it is a little larger. It sounds as though your Rine II adapter is plugged into it. It may however not be connected in the operating system. what System are you running? Windows XP, ME, 98 2000?
Right mouse clikc on My Computer and it will tell you.

If you have a router, and you are connected to it, and the router is connected to the internet, you have everything it takes to make a LAN, and you are connected to it. You just happen to be the only person at the party. You can hook other computers to the router the same way as yours is, and then you have a LAN by definition- Local Area Network. If you have XP, just make sure Simple File Sharing is disabled. You can find it in Folder Options. Simple File Sharing is the Devil.
