After several minutes another message appeared on screen saying, 'Error. Works file cannot read', and then it said re-boot computer from resart, which I did. The original error message was probably a trojan, and you downloaded a 'tool' that has trashed your system.
It is still on your machine and preventing you from re-installing Norton. I'm not sure if you'll be able to recover anything safely from this; the easiest route will be a reformat, shred the hard drive, and reinstall Windows from scratch. If you can download and install any other security software then try running it in Safe Mode.And in future, never click on one of these links. No security doftware can work if you switch it off, disable it or uninstall it.

Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for personal use;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

Shields Up security site;

http://www.opera.com/ Opera web browser
Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.

You need to install one anti virus;

http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware

And these are useful utilities;

Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://www.sys-shield.com - AbsoluteShield File Shredder

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

It would also probably be safer not to go online using this machine since you are no longer in control of it.

Good luck. I had Norton anti virus and had all kinds of problems with it. I completely unistalled it from my system and now I use AVG free and it never gives me any problems. Runs like a charm, and gets rid of all kinds of nasty stuff. I would never, ever use Norton - I had to take my computer to get repaired even though I had uninstalled Norton. I'll never install it on my computer again. It never could get rid of any virus I had on my machine, plus it caused my computer to "freeze" so many times it wasn't funny. Norton is a piece of junk. Get rid of it. With AVG Free I don't have any problems. Sounds like you have some type of virus. AVG Free, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware Se are all free programs, I have them all and they are the best.

FORGET NORTON.
IT IS NOTHING BUT TROUBLE.
THERE SHOULD BE A GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNING ON IT.
I had so much trouble with it, it mushed my head completely.
Just download these brilliant freebies.
AVG ANTIVIRUS
ZONEALARM FIREWALL
ADWARE
SPYBOT
They are absolutely great and trouble free.
My mate told me that norton actually download a virus to your computer when it is about to expire. Just to scaremonger you into renewing norton.
It is also notoriously difficult to remove from your computer. Try it. You need a programme called Your Uninstaller to get rid of it.
Good luck with it and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am living proof. : )

Seems like you have been attacked by Malicious software ,Sometime called drive by download..
Norton protects against virus ,Not against malicious software.
First step would be to totally remove this crap "games on line" .
Then take it from there.
