I work in a jewellers & sell this sort of thing, I would recomend you go into a few jewellers before making a purchase & ask them to show you various sizes of stone & also show you them sat with a wedding band (due to the shape of the stone you may need a specially made wedding band) also ask them to explain to you the 4 C's and best of luck!

I like brilliant cuts personally because they really reflect light. You have to take her with you to hte shops though.

I have an amazing hand made diamond right hand ring and I chose the settings ('rub-overs') for the wearability factor. Engagement rings are usually very high off the finger and so are prone to getting whacked on everything and that damages the claws and the stone can fall out. Plus, she might not like it that she won't be able to get her hand in her pocket. High stones get in the way...for some women.

You might consider buying the stone on its own and letting her choose a setting. It's a lot cheaper and considers her wants too. Very nice way to do it.

I like the marquise cut, its a bit different from the others and quite eye catching.

Someone suggested jewellers for advice ... whilst there are certainly some good ones out there beware that in most cases they will try and sell what they have in stock and the price will be around twice what you can buy for at trade!

You can learn a lot abotu diamonds from http://www.gia.edu ... the gemological institute of America, they are the leading organisation to provide certification of a diamonds authenticity.

Once you have seen their website, go to a UK diamond trader that has a quality reputation. My personal recommendation is http://www.bestdiamonds.co.uk who are based in London. They give great advice and their prices will be around half of what you pay in the high street.

What size stone? What is the clarity and the color? All that is important when chosing a ring. 18ct gold is very good but that is only half the equation.
