The only way to totally stop it from producing carbon monoxide to park it and never drive it again! The mixture being burned is gas & air, - the hydrocargons (gas) are burned (most of them), and oxygen from the air is consumed doing it! Now what is left is a bunch of gasses, one is the carbon and oxygen (now "O1" - - "monoxide" - mono being one). However nitrioc oxide is also produced - (enough of this makes "acid rain"). Also a little water (somewhat polluted) is also produced, you see it running out of exhaust pipe sometimes, but this is not the "condensation water" that runs out when the engine first warms up sometimes!

If your enigine IS producing too much "pollution" - it most likely isn't carbon monoxide, as even "clean engines" make carbon-monoxiude when they run!

Now there is a cure of sorts, -- there is a product (I would assume quite widely available), I saw it at Wal Mart, - it is in the " Automotive Chemicals/oil" section of store! It says that you can put it in your gas, and it will clean out the engine enough that it will pass "smog inspection", -- it cleans out the "gunk in combustion areas, injectors and fuel system, -and also cleans out a lot of sltuff in the catylitic converter - if it hasn't been working properly! The instructions are -put it in the tank, fill tank full, and drive till tank gets down to empty, --- when near empty, take it to the "inspector" and it will pass the inspection, . I did it with my grandsons car, and it did pass (State of Texas)!!

It is a little expensive to use all the time, but I would think it would clean the converter out pretty good (if it is at all saveable) with a couple cans full of product, -- Since catylitic converter costs around $200 or more to replace -- that would be a bargain! Of course if you are an "ecology freak" no matter what the cost may be you might use it all the time anyway!

All fossil fuelled vehciles produce carbon monoxide. Catalytic convertors reduce the amount. Cars during MoT's are checked for exhaust gas content and a little carbon monoxide is acceptable.

hi im not a car mechanic but a heating engineer CO or carbon monoxide is produced by all fossil fuels if they do not burn 100% cleanly so virtually impossible to eradicate, it the one known by some as the silent killer it is oderless it can kill in the home when open flued heating appliances malfunction this is NOT the emission that is effecting the ozone layer which is CO2 or carbon dioxide which is the one that we in england are trying to cut down with the introduction of high efficiency condensing boilers personally a bone of contention with myself but thats another question for me to ask i hope this helps regards stewart

Carbon Monoxide is a by product of burning coal, gas, oil all cars produce it when petrol/derv is burnt. The amount that comes out of your car is governed by the age of your engine and the efficiency of the catalytic converter in your exhaust.

If you failed the inspection you're probably making too much carbon monoxide because your engine is running too rich. Catalytic converters don't remove carbon monoxide.
Clogged air filters, mistuned carburetors, bad injectors or worn engines can all cause excessive CO.

There is nothing you can do. The fuel you burn in your car is carbon based. It produces carbon monoxide. That is why they are trying to develop cleaner fuels like Ethanol, Bio diesel, Hydrogen ect.

If your car belches out smoke from the exhaust you need a catalytic converter. It's all to do with pollution you see. A friend of mine has a diesel van which he is running on nearly 100% cooking oil. He gets no visible exhaust fumes and no smell. I think he's mad but he says the van actually runs better!

Because it was belching smoke all the way from Dagenham to Hornchurch?

RSPCA reported a line of suffocated furry little animals on the route you took to the garage.
