Keep the guns out of the reach of the children.

Keep trigger locks on the guns.

Keep the guns locked in a gun safe and keep the key or combo with you.

Keep ammo out of reach or locked up also.

Do not keep gun loaded.

Tell children true stories of what happens to children when they play with guns. That the children have shot themselves or others.

Put children through child education class about guns. It should be available through local police dept or NRA. National Rifle Association.

Get child's stuffed animal or doll. Maybe get 3 foot doll from flea market. Take child, stuffed toy, and gun to shooting range. Show child what happens to stuffed toy when it is shot. Explain that playing with guns could happen to them or friends. Don't replace stuffed toy with exact copy since it "died" If you replace it then child may still think a person could survive a fatal shot.

Ok sarcastic suggestion & will get me thumbs down but some times you get frustrated enough about it that in the back of your mind you think about it for a few moments. Shot them in foot so they will learn from personal experience that being shot hurts. No don' t really do this because it will get you in trouble.

I took my kids out when they were 5 and 3. I had them play with a coconut. I explained that it is like a skull. After I shot it with a .357Magnum there was no shell left attached to the meat. I told them if they played with a gun and it hit themselves or a friend in the head, this is what would happen. Then I had them handle a grapefruit and shot that. There was no pulp left inside. I explained that this is more like getting shot in the leg.

Now that they are 12 and 10, they are still very cautious with guns. I'll be taking the 12 year old to the range in the spring after we get some more appropriate guns for her to fire.

I grew up in a rural society where almost every home has at least one gun. And I do not know one person that shot anyone else. Kids when they are young are taught the dangers and capabilities of the guns.Taught to handle them properly and safely. If you show children things they will learn, if you just say that's bad, they get curious. I took my daughter with me and filled a gallon jug with water and red food dye. One shot and the water went everywhere. She realized right there how dangerous they can be if used improperly. Did anyone ever stop to wonder why in rural America where most people own guns you seldom hear of one kid shooting another? Ever hear of a cops kid shooting another child. It happens but very rarely. In the city where guns are banned seems like it happens every week

They shouldnt play with guns regardless real or a toy, and they should be taught the dangers of a real gun and shown why they should not be played with at all.

Real or fake ones?
Nothing wrong with them playing with fake ones; fake guns include a stick they pick up off the ground, or their finger, and they say "Bang! Bang!" They are not learning violence, it's a way for kids to play & learn about right and wrong.
If the guns are real, it's adult gunowners' responsibilities to keep firearms locked up & away from kids.

A friend of mine who was born and raised raised in the Deep South told me his parents had a few guns in the home. His dad told him if he ever touched it without permission, he'd be in the whoopin' of his life.

Best shot? Teach them about guns. Then, they will know that guns are tools, not toys.

You can't if you are carelees with kids.
Not all kids play with guns.
We have to look to this problem seriously.
Study there life style and take action that is needed early.
How can we expect our neighbourer to solve our family problems. No law is preventing all sorts of crime.
No hospitals can prevent sickness for all.
No courts can stop crime.
We only can ensure our kids to grow up as good cityzens

Let them play with them. The experience will come in handy later in life. I'd bet there will be another war somewhere when they grow up. It might save their lives !
