First of all, when one of the medics was injured, that medic unit is now out of service and unable to answer calls, so a second med unit would have to be sent.

A paramedic's first responsibility is his own safety. His second responsibility is his partner's safety. The patient is number 3, and bystanders are number 4. There is a good reason for this. Over a career, one paramedic can have a positive impact on thousands of lives. As a medic, if I do something to get myself injured or killed, how many thousands of people will that effect down the line?? Same thing for my partner. If I let her get injured or killed at the expense of another, how many thousands of people down the line will be injured or killed??

Every medic is taught from day one, scene safe, BSI (body substance isolation) first and above all else. There is nothing unfortunate about or wrong with a paramedic keeping himself safe or looking after his own.

Unfortunately, Paramedic protocol is to look after your partner before the patient. If they didn't make it to the scene of the call then they really weren't there yet even if it was infront of your house. They were not on scene when this guy got hit. And yes the paramedic who didn't get hit should have called for back up immediately.

What a quandry! He would have to help whichever one was in the most acute situation. He would of course call for back up ASAP. He is only one person trying possibly to save 2 lives...
