I think it's mostly gay guys and those who support them. A few of my close friends---one gay, one straight but very supportive of the gay culture---are obsessed with Rent. All the people I know who loooooove Rent are those who strongly feel gay marriage should be legal.

Gay men and women tend to be fans of musicals in larger numbers, and that's probably true of "Rent" as well, though it has a bit more of a gritty street sensibility so it may have a slightly higher percentage of straight male fans.
