Early embryonic cells are meristematic ("stem") and not specialized to do anything in particular. As the embryo develops these cells specialize to perform various specific or specialized functions. Examples: Muscle cells-contraction/movement ; nerve cells-carry impulses ; epidermal cells-covering ; gland cells-secretions, etc.
There are several theories as to how these unspecialized cells specialize (or differentiate).

A specialised cell is a cell which has a specific shape/structure to enable it to carry out a specific function within the living organism e.g. a root hair cell from a plant root has an extended appendage with an extended vacuole inside to provide a larger surface area to absorb water and minerals from the soil.

A cell in which only a certain combination of genes can be activated by the stimulation of its environment.It has its own shape,size,weight,epitores (that is receptors),different chemical synthesis,abilities, and of course funtion.It is also divided in a distinctive way (meaning period).
