Sounds like a tough situation. There isn't one correct answer. This works for me. I have found that there is usually a underlying cause for a person that is miserable. What I do is don't take it personally because the person is usually that way to most people. I'm not a bad person and even if that person is miserable to me, it is there loss. Some times I even feel sorry for the person, look at what they are missing out on in life. There is a saying ,keep your friends close and your enemies even closer, so don't react to their miserable existence . Be nice but don't,t bend over backwards ,just stay neutral with your reactions. A few years ago I had to deal with a preacher in a business situation. The preacher was miserable and not what I would expect from a preacher. I thought he was a real jerk and shouldn't be any where people. WELL I found out later that he had bone cancer and just got back from radiation treatment and died 6 weeks later. So I give most miserable people the benefit of doubt.

i repeat what they say to be sure I understand what they are saying "so, what you are saying is..."
I attempt to understand what the difficulty is and what they are trying to achieve. "so, if i understand you correctly, you want to punch me in the face because you hate the way I dress?"
If I can cooperate with the person to help them achieve their goals and make the situation more comfortable for everyone involved, I go ahead and make the necessary sacrifices. If they are unreasonable to the point that compromise is not possible, I tell them so "I'm sorry.I appreciate your opinion but punching me in the face is not an option(duck here if necessary) and my dress meets company policies. I suggest you get used to it or get a new job."
