Bobby Orr was the best because of what he could do from the defensive end and the offensive end. He was the most complete player. Wayne Gretzky was the benchmark for scoring, passing and just thinking the game better than anyone else. Gordie Howe was the player who played the game at a higher level than most of his contemporaries for the longest time. He was hockey history.

1. Bobby Orr - Nobody had all of the skills at the level he had and nobody changed the game as much. Imagine if he could have played 20 years on two good knees.
2. Wayne Gretzky.
3 Mario Lemieux. - The ultimate power forward. Again, if only he could have been healthy for 20 years.

No. 3---Mario Lemieux. Could have, arguably, been # 1 but a bad back and cancer didn't help.
No. 2---Bobby Orr. Also coulda been # 1. His career was cut short cause of bad knees. Dominant player.
No. 1---Wayne Gretzky. Nothing to add to the greatest player ever.
No. 4, by the way, is Gordie Howe.

1 - wayne gretzky - he didn't just lead the league on points every year, he had twice as many as the guy in 2nd place. no other athelete in any sport was so far ahead of his nearest competitors.
2 - bobby orr - raw talent and ability. both offensively and defensively. even in an injury-shortened career, still considered the best ever by many who saw him play
3 - gordie howe - great offensive player, tough player, and durable. to play for as long as he did in a sport that is so demnding.. totally amazing. also a great leader.

Mario, Howe, Gretzky. Now easily could look at Jagr as one of the best. I think Joe Mullin was like the best American player. The problem with ever is you have to look at different eras and try to compare skills. Well how can you say this player was that great when in that era they would have been terriable proably. With Mario though he took a bad team and helped raise them to a higher level and made them a decent team and the Penguins were then built around him and made a great team.
