By that I mean, there will be lots of opportunities to get promoted and change depts to go into a dept where I think the work would be more interesting etc. I am thinking that it may not be worth applying to small/medium sized companies since the movement of staff between depts will be a lot more restricted and the company may not be interational. I lke the idea of working abroad, you see!

However, the big companies usually require higher calibre employees with at least a 2:1 degree, whereas I have only got an ordinary degree - non honours. Do you think that I should be satisifed with what I have got and just apply to small/medium sized companies or try and apply for these big companies perhaps on a lower level job such as customer service or administration and hope that I could get a better job within the company through internal promotion or by applying to other jobs at the company through the internal vacancy list etc?

Thanks

I understand where you want to be! However, we usually have to start at the bottom and work our way up. Having ambition is great and this along with hard work will get you to the top. Don't get too hung up on your degree. Once you are somewhere and they like you, see that you are a good worker and have ambition you will soon be moved further up - or you can obviously apply for better positions elsewhere. Start where you can and work your way up.

I started washing up dishes 20 yrs ago with no education. I now have 2 degrees, a good job I enjoy and all the things I need. It just takes patience and perseverance.

Good luck

Alternatively, instead of looking for a great job, CREATE a great job.

* go to a smaller company that you think has promise
* know the business, the product, the competition and of course the management
* do the boring stuff, and do it well
* then bring up the suggestion, maybe with a business plan, if you can think of an opportunity for the country overseas.
* people respect enterprise more than honor degrees
