palladium is a member of the platinum metal family and is often used in the manufactor of whtie gold instead of nickel or silver because it has a natural white color which does not require rhodium coating like nickel does. it is more brittle and less dense than actual platinum hence it is also less expensive, but it has been used in jewerly since the 1940's so it is really nothing new. if you wish to have a wedding ring which will not have to be recoated with rhodium, them you should choose white gold made with palladium or a ring of palladium or platinum or sterling silver as all nickel based white gold will eventually need to be recoated to maintain it's white appearance. white gold made with nickel is actually not white but rather a gun metal gray color which is made to look white by coating it with rhodium. that coating will wear off and the ring will look gray no matter how much you clean it until you have it recoated. so the sales person is correct that palladium is a better metal for retaining it's white appearance than white gold, unless the white gold has been made with palladium instead of nickel.
