Today on the way to work my 2000 Hyundai Excel X3 run out of fuel. I went to the service station and purchased a jerry can and 5 litres of petrol and put it in the tank.
However, the car still will not start. I assume this is because there is no fuel in the engine to start it up - thus no new fuel being pumped from the tank...
There must be a way to restart a car after it has been run dry.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I tried several times to get it going. Each time it would start for a second then 'splutter' to a stop. Occasionally it would seem like it was idleing but would eventually die again. If I tried to give it a rev it would die quicker. BTW, I drive 90km every day, so it's not often on empty...!

new cars have fuel injection and dont really need primed like the older cars did.Sometimes just turning the key on and off will allow the fuel pump to run to saupply fuel to the injectors

"Marc s" made a good point...Another posibility is an airlock in the pump or in the fuel line, or the pump sucked up some gunk inside the tank and blocked the line -- or partially blocked it. I'd check the fuel filter and see if you have pressure to it. If not, the blockage is in the pump or the line. If there is pressure (to the 'in' side of the filter), it could be the filter needs changing. It's an easy thing to do and it will certainly help. Running the tank dry will always put some rubbish in the line so it's not a bad idea to change the filter anyway.
And put some more fuel in first. 5 litres is not much and if your car is on a slight slope it may not be picking up at the pump very well.
Ummm...In fact, do that first. Add at least another 5litres of fuel...
EDIT: Oh BTW and forgive me for suggesting this, but are you sure that the fuel in the jerry can was petrol and not diesel? I hate to ask, but it does happen and I just want to cover every possibility...

It sounds like the fuel filter is clogged. When you are at the bottom of the tank the sludge that deposits at the bottom work there way in to the fuel delivery system, thus clogging the filter so the fuel pump has to work harder to pump gas to the engine. Stop trying to start the car you will burn out the fuel pump.
Let the car sit for bit. Turn the key to the first position and listen for a humming noise, that would be your fuel pump working? If you don't hear it,check your fuses and relay first.
Your injectors are probably clogged too, because of the sludge. Get a good fuel system cleaner at a store that sell auto supplies and put in the gas tank. Try to start the car. If it runs try and get to a gas station and put premium gas in the tank, it has more detergents in it and will help clean the fuel delivery system. If none of these ideas work have it towed to a shop. The fuel filter needs to be changed and hopefully that will do it.
Good Luck!

You have to pump the gas pedal a few times to pump gas into the lines. Then try to start it. If this doesn't work you may have to poor just a little into the carborator to get gas up there. Remember that 5 galslons these days isn't much gas so once you get it started go strait to the gas station and fill it up. If you pumped it and it still won't start after pouring a small amount into the carborator you either flooded it or that it is another problem. If you flooded it don't keep trying to start it or you run down the battery. Wait a couple of minutes for some of the gas to evaporate and try again. Good luck.

just turn on the key you should here the electric fuel pump if not it could be the pump it self that went out . my son told me a long time ago that you have to prime all the injectors which means pulling one at a time to prime them look into the pump first . maybe check fuse
