As long as you are going to have a new Hard Disk then you would install a new Windows XP and if you have the Serial Key then no problem.

Do you have both harddrives in a PC at one time? If so it is because they are both set to be your primary disk drive - and so your bios doesnt know which O/S to put from. If this is the case, you need to change your jumper connections each time. If not, it may just be a case that your machine is missing the relevant drivers and dll files to boot. Out of interest: 1) why are you running two different O/S when they could both run XP? 2) Why do you need to frequently transfer hard drives? Would it not be better and quicker to get a USB Portable disk to transfer files? Or create a network between the machines.

If you can put that old HDD into another computer, do it and get online and download Belarc Advisor. That will tell you the product key code for your copy of Win XP and a lot of other useful information about your computer.

You can actually do that... provided you have an original disc of Windows operating system. You should also make sure that you key in the same product key that was given to you.

Along with what these guys said, you may also have to call microsoft and verify/let them know that you are the original owner of the xp copy.
