In order to prevent myself from ever being a victim of senselessness like Terry Shiavo, where can I go to get a comprehensive (and free) living will. I am fairly competent at understanding law so I could manipulate a plug-and-write will somewhat easily.

Not that I know of. But one can always prepare a will, with it being as specific and detailed as possible and get it notorized. That still holds, even if you do not have a formal one prepared, ie thru a lawyer. Getting a format to prepare one would be good.
