The Renaissance was a cultural change that took place across Europe (particularly in Italy) during the 14th to the 16th centuries. The word itself derives from the Italian for "rebirth".

It was seen as a reconnection to the classical age of art and culture and lead to changes in art inperspective, colour, and subject matter (Botticelli, Raphael); architecture by the reintroduction of classical elements and "Gothic" (Brunelleschi, Bramante), literature (Dante). It also heralded a reawakening of interest in the sciences (Galileo, da Vinci).

before the renaissance, the people in europe were 'ruled' by the church. everyone was pre-occupied with the afterlife that they forgot to live. the church took advantage of this and sold indulgences - which was one of the causing factors of the Reformation. during the renaissance period which was concentrated in Italy, people moved away from their obsession with the afterlife and started focusing instead on arts and worldy pleasures. that's where greats like da vinci and raphael come in.

A time in history when people were more concerned with arts and philosophy and improving the inner self. Most of the great art we have today came from that period.
