When people saw photographs of the Civil War dead, it had a significant impact, and helped convince people that perhaps warfare wasn't a solution to disputes between states. We haven't had a national civil war since.

I agree with the civil war answer. However, I think these pictures were slow to press and many of them were staged. It was probably world war one when the power of the photographic image really came into its own.
