Never microwave breastmilk. It can break down the good components in the milk. It can also cause hot spots which could scald baby. Instead, let it thaw in the fridge and then warm it up by floating the bottle in a mug or bowl of warm water.

Breastmilk lasts a full week in the fridge, so if you'll use pumped milk w/in a week, it's best to not even freeze it but just store it in the back of your fridge.

See the link below for good storage and handling information. I always suggest moms print this and put it on their fridge.

If you have the time put some into the fridge the day before so that it is defrosted. If this is not an option you can either run it under warm water, use a bottle warmer or if you have a crock pot stick the packets in there for a few minutes after the water has been heated.

The ONLY safest way is to let it dethaw in the refrigerator, overnight. You should never warm frozen breastmilk. After it is dethawed, then you can warm it with water. I have read book after book on breastfeeding, and they all say the same thing.

It;s not recommened to use a microwave with breast milk since the microwave can harm the delicate structure of breast milk - and so can too much heat fromthe stove. It's best to run warm water over the container and defrost it that way. If you have more time you can put it in the fridge to defrost.
