Created by Michael Fry and T Lewis, Over the Hedge takes a freshly skewed look at suburban living from the perspective of the animals who lived there first. The strip stars RJ, a mischievous raccoon, and Verne, his sensitive best-buddy turtle. A couple of boisterous "Boyz in the Wood," RJ and Verne make a hilarious pair as they fight to save their wooded wonderland from the evils and temptations of encroaching suburbia... but end up becoming distracted by wide-screen TVs, discarded fast food, comfy lawn furniture and the fun of wreaking havoc with the local homeowners’ association. Over the Hedge has delighted comics readers since 1995 with furry antics of all kinds. Nominated for the 2006 Reuben Award for Best Newspaper Comic Strip from the National Cartoonists Society, this lovable bunch leaps from the comics pages to the big screen May 19, 2006 in an animated adventure from DreamWorks based on and named after the comic strip. The film stars the voices of Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling and William Shatner, among others. Over the Hedge – the comic and the movie – mirrors the life of many suburbanites today, those folks who want to retreat from the city and commune with nature but cannot give up their creature comforts. As RJ and Verne hilariously demonstrate by fly-fishing for hot dogs off backyard barbecues, it is possible to have it all. With equal parts fascination and amusement, they observe and comment on their hapless human neighbors. There are four Over the Hedge book collections, with the latest book, Over the Hedge 4: Stuffed Animals, released in the spring of 2006. More than just critical observers, these characters have spiritual sides as well. Over the Hedge won the Religious Communicators Council’s 1998 Wilbur Award for "excellence in the communication of religious issues, values and themes." In the award-winning entries, RJ and Verne ponder the origin of humanity, the plausibility of reincarnation, and the eternal question: Is God a turtle or a raccoon?
