I have an HP laptop that supports 802.11a/b/g. I have a 256 kbps ADSL broadband internet connection. How do I set up a wireless network at home so that I can access my Internet wirelessly? I have only a laptop and no other PC in my house. Should I buy a router or an access point? What is the difference? Will it make a difference if I buy a 802.11b instead of a 802.11g router?

You should get a wireless router. 802.11g is 5 times faster than 802.11b. but it won't matter too much since your internet speed isn't all that fast. 802.11g would be more useful in a multi-computer setting. You buy the router and follow the instructions which are fairly simple, if you're thinking of setting it up on your own you probably know enough to get it going.

An access point needs a router or a switch to be plugged into. When you buy your router, make sure you either have an external modem, or the router you buy has a modem built in. Look at your connection speed for your DSL- b has a rate of 11Mbps, and g has a rate of 54Mbps.

IF your current modem plugs in via USB (same plug as the momeory stick), then yes you will need a Wireless Modem/Router.

If your curent modem uses an ethernet (network) cable already then all you really need is a wireless access point.

Most modern equipment supports a/b & g, you are better off to get a wireless system that does support g, less compatibility issues.

you're getting the information from one source, by skill of way of your internet connection and your instantaneous router. If extra desirable than one consumer is pulling concepts from an identical get entry to element, there is way less bandwidth available to all and sundry at that element. once you play on line, do no longer run different internet-related applications on an identical time. the less call for this is placed on your internet connection, the quicker your DS connection would be. to boot, your laptop isn't meant to be as cellular as your DS, so connect your computing device to the router at as quickly as by skill of way of an ethernet cable.
