I'll be in NYC on Thanksgiving day. That's the only chance I'll have to shop but I was wondering if stores in New York City were OPEN on Thanksgiving Thursday or the Wednesday before?

Thanksgiving Day is the big Macy's Day Parade and that is huge in NYC. Majority of your department stores and specialty shops will be closed that day, however, the day before they will be opened. Most stores in the city are opened late, i.e., 10 pm. After all, it is the city! The biggest shopping day, and it is literally crazy with crowds, shoulder to shoulder people, is the day after Thanksgiving. It is the kick off of the Christmas season; discount sales, stores vivaing for a sale. Stores stay opened late, and it is a "mad-house" of shoppers.

Hi CL,

Go watch the Macy's Day parade & shop the day after better bargins that way & it usually kicks off Christmas,
Do you have Walmart, K-mart or Target stores there maybe there open for business. Best thing to do before you go shopping that day is call & see if stores will be open.
Have a good & gobble up the sales! :0)

oh my God, are you kidding me? I would suggest that you have someone shop for you in NYC THIS WEEK because I can tell you, it is hell trying to food shop on that day in NYC. People are already shopping here NOW for thanksgiving. Another way would be for you to find some grocery service like "Fresh Direct" (www.freshdirect.com) and have your food delivered to wherever youre going to be. If not, you can try the whole shopping on thanksgiving thing, but Im warning you from firsthand experience - expect other shoppers to give you no quarter, and prepare for the worst case scenario.
