I recently came acroos a guy on the net who was fed up with being policed by the nets Nerds, (you know, those that do not have a lot to say but use other peopl's dissabilities against them). He like me is dyslexic, both of us have a severe problem with spelling, with me going back to I was 12. I am long passed caring about anyone taking the rise out of me but since I have been the butt of harrasment all my life I can understand how hurtful it can be for others. I'm in my mid twenties and although dyslexic I have a GCSE at 'A' Level in Maths, Physics and Echonomics all top of the range passes, I didnt go to university and part o f the reason for that was concern about my written English. Do you not think that the disability of dyslexia is burdon enough without being sought out and lashed by those that that presumably have enough intelligence to answer a question on this forum. Or do you think being on thois forum makes you open game for any type of treatment the person answering wishes

Where possible I do use spelling check, but when asking a question spellcheck only checks the actual question so what I am writing now canot be spell checked.
When answering a question spell check after so many words. I use windows as best I can but still make spelling mistakes. You must remember many people have tried to help correct the disability over the years but I'M affraid you can limet the dissability but never get rid of it.

I don't think it's cool personally. If people choose to do it then fair enough. I do think that putting yourself in the public arena makes you fair game, although I don't tend to find it humorous to mock disabled people in that way.
I do agree that dsylexia is a burden, but I don't think that most people who criticise bad spelling are doing it because they think it's cool to make fun of dyslexic, they (all right, we, I do it too) do it because most people who spell poorly are not dsylexic, just ignorant and lazy.
Although I've outed myself as a part-time member of the spelling and grammar police, I don't call people stupid or mock them based purely on their inability to spell. I also tend not to comment *just* to correct spelling mistakes, unless the question is written so poorly that it doesn't make any sense or obviously means something different from what the poster had intended.
Just an as aside, well done for doing such a great job of getting over your disability! It's a shame if that helped hold you back from going to university, but there's nothing to stop you from doing that in the future - good use of spell checking and proof readers would probably sort out most of your problems. Unlike so much of what you see posted at Yahoo Answers, you are able to write clearly and coherently - your sentences are easily comprehensible, even if you do make some spelling mistakes. That puts you streets ahead of most of the participants!

I think it's 'uncool' to take the mickey out of ANYONE, regardless of whether they have a disability or not! We're all different and no-one's perfect. What I find laughable is that the people who take the mickey out of others have got a major problem themselves! E.g. Many of the people who criticised your spelling and grammar and told you to use a 'spell check on here made the same mistakes themselves and needed to take their own advice!
By the way, congratulations on what you've done so far (your Grades were better than mine and I've not been through what you have)! It's great to see that you haven't let your problems (e.g. other people) hold you back!
Good luck to you!

I don't think it's OK to be cruel or mock peoples disabilities but you have to accept that on this forum there will be people who will have a go just for the fun of it.I wouldn't take it personally, they don't know you,are unlikely to meet you and don't really matter.I can take a certain amount of P*** taking if it's genuinely funny though.Lighten up,and yes there is always the spell check option!

Unfortunately, people will not know that you are dyslexic. However, I don't comment on peoples spelling, although, to be honest, it does colour my judgement. One of the reasons people have become cynical about 'disabilities', is that it has developed into a full blown industry in its own right; promoted by this Government and their left wing acolytes. It seems that the whole world has to adjust to meet the needs of a minority. In an ideal world, YES, but it is exremely expensive.

My sister in law was labelled "stupid" untill they discovered in her 3rd year at secondary school that she had a severe form dyslexia.
After some coaching and some specific software(state supplied laptop and all software) she passed her degree in architecture ,
So the only thing stopping anyone with this problem (once it has been diagnosed) is the self determination to succeed.
And as for anyone thinking it is "cool" to "rip the pish" of of someone with disabilities, I know of plenty of disabled people who would relish meeting one of these sad type individuals and teach them some basic manners.

The main problem now with this forum is it is getting harder to tell a genuine disability from the modern day English, at least with yourself you are trying to spell correctly and obviously care, you should take no notice of idiots who try to take the p*ss as in most cases they are braindead and are only after cheap points. it is more annoying to see questions asked in text language
