To reach standard BEST SELLER lists a novel must sell at least half a million copies within 3 months of it's release, or less, to get on the NY TIMES BEST SELLER LIST, it's a cool million copies.

The concept of "Best Seller" is a construct of the publishers' marketing people. No copies have to be sold for them to claim it is a best seller.

ITS DEPENDANT ON WHOS LIST YOU ARE REFFERING TO.
publishers produce thier own in house best seller list which is not a true reflection of the amount of people who have actually read the book as opposed to the companies who buy in books for discounting at a later date. popular books are obvious, da vinci code, harry potter etc what is not so clear is when a author like the one mention in other answers produce a book that is a formulated rehash of the last thirty books she has written.categories that are of one genre do nothing but hide the true popularity of a book. I doubt it's very much.
Isn't Danielle Steel a best-seller author?
Have you read her books?
Geez.
She probably sells a million copies to every library in the world so that the pensioners can read it for free.
