It was a straggly affair at first. Then a few neighbouring rulers found common ground to revolt against the British. They more or less lost. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal ruler, an old man at the time was made the leader of the uprising more as a figurehead. It was because of the history of the Mughal Empire. But after the revolt was suppressed and his sons executed, it was carried on in the South and Central India by other kingdoms who were affected by the Doctrine of Lapse (ie., if there was no legitimate heir then the British would take over governance).
Some of the great fighters in the Uprising of 1857 were, Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the Murshidabad army who protested against the greased shells. Then there were Nana Saheb of the Maratha Kingdom, Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi (Central India), Tatya Tope. Down South there was Rani Chennamma of Kittur.
