The concept of nationalism came before the industrial revolution (The industrial revolution occured in Britain from around 1780). However the the industrial revolution brought railways, canals, huge infrastructure projects and other technologies that made different parts of a country all work together. People started seeing themselves as nationals of a country.

The industrial revolution also introduced labour specialisation, urbanisation, literacy, trade unions and the development of an antithetical class of capitalists. All these contributed to the ideas of socialism.
