At this time, it's not federally recognized. Because of this, couples legally married in other countries or in states which do recognize same sex marriage cannot transfer their marriages from one state to another, nor can immegrants have their same sex marriages from other countries recognized in any state.
There is ONE state which currently has legalized same sex marriages and one state in which it's state Supreme Court has ruled that it is legal.
Massachusetts has legal same sex marriage, but you must be a legal resident of either Massachusetts or Rhode Island to qualify and they do not recognize out of country same sex marriages.
New Jersey's State Supreme Courts just ruled last month that same sex marriage should be legal in that state. They have six months to make legal arrangements to make it available. They haven't even begun to decide how to go about this process yet.
Vermont has Legal Civil Unions, these are NOT the same as legal Marriages and do not carry the same legal rights, priveledges, protections or benefits as legal marriage.
Hope this helps some.

No. for as long as people have faith there is a few thing inherently incorrect with homosexuality, there is not any longer genuine equality. for as long as people have faith that the passage of Proposition 8 in California capacity that the voters have spoken, there is not any longer gay marriage. needless to say they are forgetting that Prop 8 gained by capacity of an quite, very, VERY slender majority. 40 9% of alternative persons disagree with their view so how can they think of that "the voters have spoken"? in basic terms their (fifty one%) voices have been heard! regrettably, people fail to realize how a lot lack of know-how there nevertheless exists in this united states. California replaced into the 1st state to legalize interracial marriages. If we will not get gay marriage surpassed, then meaning the nationwide tone is even harsher and extra against it. i don't have self belief anymore interior the thought we are a democratic united states the place logical questioning, tolerance, open-mindedness and the willingness to stand up for freedom for all stay substantial. No, those issues have needless to say taken a returned seat to lack of know-how and primitive religious questioning. isn't it large that persons who supported Prop 8 are asserting that the protests against its passing are demonstrations approximately religious intolerance!? HOW DID quickly people MAKE THIS ALL approximately THEM?!?!?!?!?!?

Only in Mass. and NJ. The rest of the states have banned it or don't recognise it. P.S. The federal gov't doesn't recognise same sex marriages at all so ,as a result, no ss marriages have pension benefits for the surviving partnerin the case of death..
