Knowing the sex of your iguana is seriously important!! If you have a male...you need to prepare for breeding season aggression and the physical changes male iguanas go through...such as leaving seminal plugs and looking out for prolapsed hemipenes.

For females you need to be aware of them becoming gravid which comes with a huge amount of issues when the female becomes full of eggs. It's a NEED to know issue.

It's only possible to visually sex your ig once it reaches sexual maturity at about 18 months. If you're an experienced "sexer" it can be done closer to a year old. The femoral pores have already been mentioned...this is the dots on the inside of the thigh. There are also the jowls and the temporal lobes...or "brain bumps". The jowls start to enlarge in the males. This is the area of the large tympanic scale under the jaw. On top of the head between the forhead and where the spikes begin is another area where fatty deposits grow.

These are not always completely accurate. There are some females who have an excessive amount of testosterone that can mimick the look of the male...and on the flip-side...a very submissive male can take on female characteristics. The majority of the time this visual sexing is correct. The most positive way to sex on...outside of a female laying eggs and a male flashing his hemipenes at you...is through a DNA test which can be done by a company in CA using their online card. That link is below, too. They specialize in bird DNA, but they do iguanas and other animals, too.

Is essential to determine the sex of iguanas, especially if you have 2 males. At or even before maturity, the strongest one will try to kill the other. Is easy to determine the sex of an iguana. Narrow minded people----turn your head away now! Gently turn the iguana on its back. Now look at the rear legs. The male has dots all along the underside of the back legs. Females have an occasional group of 3 dots a wide space, then 3 more dots. A majority of lizards can be sexed this way. Males also bob their heads. This is a frequently asked question and there's nothing embarassing about answering.
