Try searching on Craigslist for your local area. There are usually a lot of contract jobs for graphic artists. Make sure you have a good portfolio to present to potential clients.

1. Put together a portfolio of your best work. Scan the whole thing and burn some CDs. Then get in touch with book publishing companies. Introduce yourself and offer your illustration services to them and their aspiring authors, Many manuscripts come in bare but really need some help in terms of graphics to support the story or subject matter. Either the publicist will contract with you or refer you to an author to produce supporting illustrations. Highest and best of this world is illustrating comic books.
2. Attorneys who handle injuries and medical situations usually need medical illustrations (in poster size) for the courtroom. For an illustrator, it is highly lucrative. Most of the images can be found in small sizes in medical books but they need to be full color, poster size and adapted for the condition of the case. Same as above, send a small 3-4 paper portfolio of color human figure illustrations to the attorneys in your area with an intro letter about what you can do for them.
In any of these options, start small and locally, if possible. Once you have a dozen or so under your belt, open a website and get that dozen out there so others can find you.
