I don't know, probably because of people like my brother. He says the more swears there are in a song, the better the song is. Why does he think this? Because only 9, very stupid, and he thinks swears are funny. Like this one time when he was in my room, and I was listening to SOAD. And in this one song said "WHY THE F@CK DID YOU TAKE HIM AWAY FROM US YOU MOTHERF@CKERS, F@CKERS, F@CKERS!!!!!!" And my brother started laughing like crazy.
Idiot.
Me, I like songs because of the sound of the song, voice of the guy singing, and the lyrics to the song(as in what the song is talking about, not swears.), not because of how many times swears are in songs.
But swears also kind of set a mood to some songs. Sometimes. But some rappers use swears like its just another word. And that is why when you walk into a cd store and you pick a rap cd and a rock cd off the shelf, the rap cd is a lot more likely to have the parental advisory sticker on it.
Actually now that I think of it, most of the cds I have have a parental advisory sticker on it. Just the ones that came with rock cds came off with the plactic wrapped around the cd.
You know, I don't think I helped you at all, I feel like I wrote a lot of **** around the "swears" topic, but I didn't help you. That is probably because I didn't help you at all. But if I did, then, I would be really confused. I dont always make a lot of sense.....Bye

In folk and rock music, I think it's just the lyric writer trying to make their song as "believeable" as possible-- just like in any other art form. If the artist censors himself, it takes away the effect of the word and makes the song experience less credible for the listener as those words are used very often by the majority of the population over age 12. Liz Phair said she came from a visual arts background, so she was used to putting everything even things that are obscene into her lyrics, like she would do in her paintings. However, I'm not sure why rap music uses so many demeaning terms towards women though, as I don't listen to that kind of music very much.

It is probably because that's what makes makes people buy it. They're gonna do what makes music sell even if they don't agree of like it. Look at Beyonce. She talks about how great of a Christian she is and a roll model for young girls, but at the same time she wears skirts so tight and so short it's ridiculous. In that case, sex is what sells. As long as they're making the money, it's all good to them. Does that make sense?

It's what people are interested in these days. Plus, they have the potential to make certain songs feel "hot" or "sexy" I suggest ignoring the lyrics if you really don't like them at particular times/places, which is what i do, because rhythm is still pretty cool most of the time. Otherwise, just have fun with them =D

Thats a good question. I suppose it would be to prove a point in the song, or it suits the tune... or if the song is emotional, it could express anger ...also these days sex sells, and image is important. swearing could help sell music and could be attractive to some peopl...

Because that is how the writers of those songs speak anyways and therefore don't know how to express themselves in a civil manner?
