Take it from me. Talk to your student advisor at your college or university. What type of teacher you deside to become will deside on which classes you need to take.
Which grade will pay more? Ok, here are some things I do know. Usually College Professors get paid the most. It also depends on where you live and how musch that state pays for teachers. Public schools pay more per year that Private schools do. Most Public schools pay by the year and not by salary like Public school. Also it is like with any other job, you get paid by your experience. I know for a fact that most teachers salary or rate of pay is baced on their experience (yrs of teaching, what level, etc).

In my area of NC, math (particularly middle/high school algebra teachers) and English/reading teachers get paid the most. This is because the students get standardized tests on these subjects. Many places have an incentive program where if your students do well you get an even bigger supplement. Those are also subject areas that seem to be in high demand, yet they can be the most challenging to teach.

Ideally, I think you should consider what subjects you would enjoy teaching. I teach music and I LOVE it! Because I love music, the fact that don't get paid quite as much as some other teachers doesn't bother me.

I'll take a moment to explain the salary/supplement system to you--I think it will help.
Basically the state gives all teachers one salary (which is usually pretty low). Each county or district has what they call a supplement, which is what you get paid in addition to what the state pays you. So, a better question is where would you be willing to teach???
To do research on teacher salaries, do a yahoo search on "(insert state here) department of education" and their websites should better answer your questions about income.

To help you decide what age to teach. . . I say start at the top (high school) and work your way down (elementary school). You will be able to tell what fits VERY quickly.
