Drink something warm and comforting: Warm milk, tea, cocoa.. but nothing stimulating like caffeine or lemon, etc.
Read a little. Do you have benadryl? It will work in a pinch, but herbs are better. Wu Cha Seng (Siberian Ginseng) will take the stress away so you can sleep. Buy some for the future and keep it on hand. Use 5htp carefully, it can give you vivid dreams and/or nightmares. Valerian Root or Melatonin are excellent for relaxing. Don't mix these... choose ONE and take it all by itself. On another night, try something else if the first one didn't work as you would have hoped.
A very warm bath will help. Put lavender in the water if you have it in any bath products. Does white noise help you? turn on a fan or air cleaner to block other sounds.. music helps some people. It doesn't help me because I start hearing individual words and want to "finish the song"... but instrumentals help me sometimes.
I also read. I will take an herb (usually melatonin or valerian) and read for about 10 mintutes.
Do not nap tomorrow, even if you feel like it. Make sure you go to bed a little early (maybe 30 minutes) and be very tired.
Exercise helps some people. It stimulates me, but if I exercise an hour before bed I get good results.
Ask God to help.
Wrap your body and/or feet up in a blanket to help you feel cradled... make sure you are in a comfortable bed.. maybe change the location of your head on the bed. Sometimes, when I am ill, I have to sleep close to the earth on the floor (I can't do that any more because we live in the country and have scorpions) or with my head at the foot of my bed.
Know that you are safe, you are loved, and you are important to someone. Be content!
I hope you can get to sleep. Goodnight :-)

GREAT SLEEP SECRET
Many thanks to "The Deans" for contributing this great tip
How to use the fingers of your left hand to give yourself the best night's sleep of your life!
Go to a doctor's office complaining of insomnia and you are likely to walk out with prescriptions for depressants, tranquilizers, sedatives and anti-anxiety pills. This stuff throws your system so far out of whack, you'll end up going back to the doctor for more prescriptions to fix the side affects.
Instead, place the index and middle finger of your left hand on the inside of your right wrist, three finger-widths below the crease of your wrist. Do this while you are seated comfortably. Press gently and hold this position for up to 3 minutes: and then release. Switch hands and repeat.
You have just found one of the most powerfull sleep-promoting points in oriental medicine.
If you doubt that it works, try it tonight, just before you go to sleep. My patients have been amazed and they have stopped taking their tranqilizers, sleeping pills and anti-depressants.

try to go to bed at the same time every night, so your brain develops a regular sleep pattern. listening to music is good too, but not too loud, and you should try classical because it's relaxing. don't have any caffeine for a few hours before bed. make your bedroom dark and quiet and try to clear your mind before you go to sleep.

Go lay down in the dark with no noise or distractions, except maybe soft, instrumental type music if that helps you.

My best advice is to read until you fall asleep. That way, you'll at least get something done and entertain yourself while you're waiting.
