Hi unfortunately you can't really keep the small down without cleaning...just one drop of mose urine real smells strong...
I had several hundered of them at one time when showed & bred them for my own personal research into color genetics...NOT lab animals before you get the wrong end of the stick...just personal reseach to help me understand the color genes as I have bred ots of different colors of Border Collies carrying the merle genes...
It's never a good idea to put smelly stuff in the cages as you never know what it will do to your pet mice...
So nice smelling wood chippings that smell of pine is the only fresh smell you get with the mice & thats only by cleaning them out constantly...
Regards Jake

This is an easy question for me to answer, as I deal with the problem daily. We generally have around 200 or more mice in our shop to sell for feeding to snakes. Orschelns and other feed stores carry pine shavings that look like very small pieces. There are no byproducts or chips in it. The product is kiln dryed(heat treated) and a lot of the dust is screened out. When using this type of bedding, the urine is absorbed more easily. Please don't consider using cedar, as it is harmful to all rodents. Even if cleaning regularly doesn't keep the odor down, try using several sheets of newspaper underneath the shavings. Make sure the mouse is using a water bottle and remove uneaten fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Wet litter really smells horrible too.

No. cleansing the cage relies upon on what percentage mice are in a unmarried cage. sparkling it once a week to each and every few days - substitute out the bedding. as quickly because it receives extremely undesirable sparkling it pleased with bleach water, yet rinse properly and enable it thoroughly dry till now putting all of it up back and putting your mouse/mice in it. they could devour the sock with the baking soda. gentle a candle (faraway from the cage, do no longer leave it unattended) or spray some air freshener (back faraway from the cage, yet possibly interior a similar room).

Sprinkle orange peels and cinnamin sticks inside. the cage to make" her room "smell sweeter. Keep a box of baking soda outside the cage to absorb bad odors in "your room."

You can get a bag of charcoal at any pet supply (for aquariums) and spread it on the bottom before putting down the bedding..
