a rod going bad makes a very loud, and unmistakeable banging when the engine is running and is louder when you press the gas pedal. it seems more likely your son's car is somewhat out of time or there is a lifter that needs adjusting. if the sound is a light dinging sound it's probably the gas. older vehicles need to have the lifters adjusted when the pinging gets to bad. you may try using a tank of the higher grade gas to see if it's gas or a lifter problem. the higher grade will usually eliminate the pinging if its gas. you can have the timing checked before having the lifters adjusted to see if that solves the problem. also, if the vehicle has not had a tune-up in the last 60-70k miles you may want to have it done. a competent mechanic can give you a precise diagnosis if you know one you can trust not to tell you major work is needed when a tune or lifter adjustment will solve the problem.

It sounds to me like the timing on the car is too advanced, This would cause the noise you describe, If a rod was going out it would knock at all times not just when going up hill or accelerating. Move your distributor timing down a degree or two and try it out. If your car has no distributer It must be a defective sensor. But it would not be a push rod. Take the car to a repair shop and have a code check done. You will be happy to know that your problem will cost alot less than rebuilding the engine.

Most times it will be a con-rod problem, but if the timing isn't set properly for the type of fuel being used, that can cause the same sound.
